THE "HIDDEN" £12 MILLION
Audit Commission Visit
The Borough Council has been severely embarrassed by an accounting error that failed to identify an additional £12 million in its coffers after the transfer of Council properties. More >>
Motorway Madness
Sawley Lib Dems believe the proposed extension of the M1 to 8 lanes is madness More >>
Principal of zero waste
Sawley Lib Dems believes the council's policy is having a serious impact on environment.
Recycling should be spread right across the borough, not just in parts of it. More >>
Did you know plastic bags are a menace?
  • About 10 billion plastic bags are given away by shops and supermarkets each year.
  • "Free" plastic bags cost around £1 M a year
  • Many of the bags are just thrown away and end up in landfill sites or littering streets and parks.
  • A plastic bag levy has been recently introduced in the republic of Ireland where customers pay 9p per bag. The law stops supermarkets giving them away free.
  • The Liberal Democrats are investigating the idea as part of a review of how the tax system can be used to protect the environment.
  • Cllr Craig France has also contacted ASDA asking how they intend to reduce the use of plastic bags.
SAWLEY POORLICING
Many residents are becoming increasingly concerned and frustrated at the lack of police cover in Sawley, particularly since the retirement of the local bobby a few months' ago who has not been replaced. The Lib Dem FOCUS Team is campaigning for more bobbies on the beat. "Sawley needs visible policing and the police sub-station (at the Sawley Community Centre) should be used regularly as a focal point" says Cllr Allen.
 Bulky Rubbish Collection
Sawley Liberal Democrats believe the Borough Council’s decision to introduce a standard £10 charge for collecting bulky rubbish from households will cause more fly dumping in the borough, making it a danger to health and produce more eyesores. Angry residents have contacted the FOCUS Team about the Borough Council's decision to introduce the charge.

Flood Insurance Update
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has confirmed that home insurance cover will continue to be provided for homes on the flood plains. However, those most at risk will be looked at on a "case by case" basis.
For most Sawley homeowners this will probably mean that premiums will rise but flood cover for homes and businesses should be maintained
Free Parking for
recyclers!
Cllr Rodney Allen is continuing to campaign for the reinstatement of free short stay parking spaces at Long Eaton Railway Station. The Borough Council now says that the question of free spaces will be considered next year in light of a review of charges and a survey on the usage of the car park. In the meantime, a notice is being erected confirming that people using the recycling facilities do not need to purchase a ticket.
CAMPAIGN ISSUES
GRAFFITI CONTRACTS
Cllr Craig France has asked the graffiti team to clean up around the buss shelter on Tamworth Road (near the Co-op) and a couple of other hotspots - BUT they are yet to be done.
GRASS CUTTING!!
The Lib Dem FOCUS Team has been working with residents on Osmaston Close to highlight their disappointment at the level of service provided by Park Services in cutting the grass this year. We hope to see some improvements next year.
SAWLEY PARK FENCE?
Cllr Craig France has asked Park Services to erect a Fence around a boundary of Sawley Park to prevent wayward footballs damaging property on Darley Drive. The Borough Council has said that they cannot afford it for this year, but will be submitted as a future bid.
SAWLEY PARK COMPOUND
The Lib Dem FOCUS Team thanks Park Services for cleaning the compound next to the Sawley Community Centre and painting the changing huts in response to our request. We are continuing to campaign for this building to be refurbished.
LOCK LANE LIGHTING-  DECISION MADE IN THE DARK
The Borough Council announced over the summer that it was to erect 19 columns of street lighting (from the railway line to the first bend) on Lock Lane without consulting local councillors or residents.
Although the Lib Dems FOCUS Team welcomes a lighting scheme for this stretch of road, we are disappointed that the Borough Council was unable to consult residents on the scale and timing of the proposed scheme.
TRENT LOCK CAR PARK & LITTER
Cllr Craig France has met with Trent Lock residents and is working with them to:
  • ask for increased security measures at Trent Lock car park with a view to CCTV cameras being installed.
  • approach the Environmental Services Department calling for an improved service in terms of refuse collection.
