Motorway Madness
Sandiacre Dems believe the proposed extension of the M1 to 8 lanes is madness More >>
Ditch the
"White Elephant"
The Borough Council is developing plans to develop a leisure complex at Pewit in Ilkeston. This "white elephant" scheme will cost £4.5 M to build and will lose nearly another £1M in its first five years of operation.
"The leadership of the council has rushed through its capital program for the next three years with the minimum of scrutiny" said Lib dem group leader Craig.
Although this is in some ways a worthwhile project the Council really does have bigger challenges.
Erewash needs to invest in its core services such as expanding the Borough Council's recycling schemes and improving street cleaning and financial services.
Rubbish Decision!!!
There is anger by many residents at the Borough Council's decision to introduce a standard £10 charge for collecting bulky rubbish from households.
Lib Dem Councillors have opposed the introduction of this charge and asked the Council to reconsider- but they are not listening. The ruling group made the decision without reference to other councillors./ This hasty decision will damage the local environment due to fly tipping.

The "hidden"
£12 Million
The Borough Council has been severely embarrassed by an accounting error, which failed to identify an additional £12M in its coffers after the transfer of council properties. More >>
A visit from the Audit Commission
In the light of the above (and poor reports from inspections) the audit commission is making a special visit to the Borough Council to check that it is performing to a satisfactory standard. This is important visit, which highlights the concerns that people have about the standing of Erewash Borough Council.

The Lib Dem group will work constructively with the visitors to make suggestions on how the Borough Council can improve.

Sandiacre South Focus
Safety & Security
The proposed traffic signals for the Rushly Lane/ Bostocks lane Junction have been approved and should be installed in this years budget. The signals will include a pedestrian phase on all four roads at the junction.
Traffic speeds are being monitored in Sandiacre, particularly on Derby Road. There are an unacceptably high number of vehicles travelling in excess of 40 mph, causing problems for both children and cars trying to enter onto Derby Road.
Go ahead has also been given for 4 new CCTV cameras in the Station Road / Derby Road area of central Sandiacre.
Dog Fouling continues to be a problem - Please use the Dog Bins. Borough Council Dog Wardens do patrol the area, and have the power to prosecute. Fines of up to £400 can be levied - and there are prosecutions pending!
Leisure
The Doncaster Avenue recreation ground has been well used since refurbishment of the basketball / 5-a-side court in August. the work was carried out through Groundwork Erewash and Barclay's Funding

The St. Giles Park in the north of sandiacre will shortly be closed by Erewash Borough Council for refurbishment and will re-open in late spring 2003.

 Focus on Planning
Supermarket
The site for the proposed supermarket has now ben cleared. LIDL have planning permission for a supermarket and a row of shops. However, a new application has been submitted for a supermarket only.
Springfield Mill
A Planning application has been lodged for 100+ flats in this building.
The regent Street site
Owned by Westerman's has also been cleared and has outline planning permission for housing. Discussions with EBC have indicated these will be 2/3 bedroom properties together with a pensions scheme. Rumours of other types of development on this site have been denied.
The Lib Dem View
The Liberal Democrats are generally supportive of all these schemes that should help to develop this long-neglected but important area of Sandiacre in a beneficial way.
